Marcia Wardell Kelly is a choreographer within the abstract expressionist legacy of modern dance. She danced with the Murray Louis Dance Company and was a soloist and principal dancer with the Nikolais Dance Theater. Marcia has developed a personal understanding of the Mary Wigman, Hanya Holm, Alwin Nikolais philosophy that dance is the art of motion, qualified by space, time, shape and energy.
Today, Marcia focuses on creating choreography that investigates how, through collaborative exploration, any one of us, can become eloquent non-verbal “speakers” in an ephemeral art form. Her process involves working closely with dancers and other collaborating artists to develop unique “motional” vocabulary that will fully express the intended message. With her experience and commitment to artistic expression, Marcia's choreographic projects offer an enlivened experience for those seeking to give meaning to their work.
In addition to working on her choreographic projects, Marcia offers mentorship and coaching to both aspiring and veteran dancers. Her guidance helps dancers to develop their performance skills, refine their technique through embodied focus, and find the thread of experience running through their work . With her deep understanding of motion and qualitative expression, Marcia offers a holistic experience for those seeking to explore and grow.
Marcia also teaches workshops offering a comprehensive look at the value of improvisational exploration for those looking to deepen their understanding of composition and embodied performance experience.
